Practical Maintenance to Reduce Home Insurance Rates

yellow lemon fruit beside clear glass bottleA well-maintained home is one that will keep you safe and secure without presenting you with constant problems. Plus, when you keep your home in good working order, you will also make it less of a homeowners insurance risk, and therefore you might save considerably on your premiums. Insurers like homes that don’t pose them a significant risk of having to pay a claim.

Consider a few practical steps to take over the years to keep your property in perfect order.

  1. Tear down old structures on your property.
  2. You might have an old shed, well, dog house or treehouse on your property. Any of these, if left to deteriorate, could become massive safety hazards. They might be fire risks, attract pests, and could of course become places where a visitor might get hurt. By tearing down these structures if you no longer won’t them, you won’t have to place as much reliance on your home insurance’s detached structures coverage. You can direct that coverage to the structures where it will do the most good.

  3. Install household reinforcements.
  4. There are many ways that you can reinforce your home against numerous hazards like severe weather or earthquakes. Newer construction often includes numerous safety features. However, older homes might need additional protection. Still, by installing storm shutters, re-aligning the foundations, installing fire-resistant exterior features or just installing new locks on all of your doors and windows, you’ll be better prepared in case of hazards.

  5. Clear away overgrowth and old foliage.
  6. An abundance of trees or other plants on your property can create safety hazards. Dead foliage is a fire hazard, and any type of tree that is close to your home could fall on it during a storm, for instance. Therefore, make it a priority every season to clear away dead foliage, and if you notice that a tree on the property is dead, then immediately have it cut.

  7. Patch up the roof.
  8. Your roof is perhaps your home’s most important structural feature. It is the first line of defense when it comes to keeping you warm and dry within your four walls. While roofs are designed to take a beating, they still will experience periodic wear and tear. If you neglect your roof, either before or after a damaging event, the amount of loss that you might sustain could be significantly worse than you might have expected.

  9. Do some Spring Cleaning.
  10. When you are cleaning up your home next, this is the perfect time of year to make note of any small problems you noticed and need to repair. Additionally, if you plan to replace or get rid of certain possessions, then this might be time to review your possessions insurance to see if it still offers adequate levels of protection.

Practicing regular maintenance is one of the best ways to keep your home insurance rates low. Take care of your home and you’ll see the benefits. Talk to one of our agents today for more information.
