Protecting Yourself From High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a condition that affects many Americans. High blood pressure may not be the most noticeable condition. But, it can still cause severe damage. Being diagnosed with high blood pressure also poses an insurance risk.

At one time, high blood pressure might have caused you to lose your health insurance coverage. Health insurance companies used to be able to deny coverage for people suffering from pre-existing conditions, such as blood pressure problems.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) now guarantees health coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions. So, if you have high blood pressure, you can still get the coverage you need.

ACA Benefits for High Blood Pressure
The ACA does much more than guarantee coverage for those with high blood pressure. It also provides access to many services that can help prevent or treat high blood pressure. These services almost always come free of charge. All adults can access services that include:

  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Diet counseling
  • Obesity screening
  • Tobacco and alcohol use screening

All these conditions have correlations to high blood pressure. By visiting the doctor for preventative services, patients can increase their overall health. They can also stay on top of conditions that might prevent high blood pressure and other problems.

Preventing High Blood Pressure
Many health conditions and practices can cause high blood pressure. And high blood pressure can then lead to many more serious issues. Health coverage for high blood pressure is a guarantee. However, preventing high blood pressure should be your goal.

A healthy lifestyle can help you avoid high blood pressure problems. By working with your doctor, you can improve your overall health.

  • Do not smoke under any circumstances. Tobacco use increases your risk of blood pressure problems. It also leads to other serious health conditions.
  • Refrain from consuming excessive alcohol. Occasional consumption usually poses a low risk of enhanced blood pressure. However, frequent drinking can damage your overall health and raise your blood pressure significantly.
  • Remain active, and include exercise in your daily plan. Exercise can help you lower stress levels and your baseline blood pressure.
  • Drink water. Focus on drinking the recommended eight glasses of wter every day. Monitor your caffeine intake, and consider drinks that are natural sources of energy. Refrain from drinking sugary drinks excessively.
  • Watch your diet. Diets that are heavy in fats, carbohydrates and sugars increase the risk of health problems. High blood pressure may become a danger when you consume too much of these foods.

The Affordable Care Act provides free services that can help Americans get help for high blood pressure. Careful attention to your health can reduce your risk for this condition. A healthy blood pressure can reassure your insurance provider that you are low-risk.
